S1 E1 - Overcoming Academic Challenges

Dr. Tonya Cannon, PhD, SHRM-CP, ACUE Season 1 Episode 1

In today’s episode, I’m diving into overcoming academic challenges and sharing a personal story about my experience with a calculus course. As someone with a humanities background, I found myself struggling with abstract mathematical concepts that were completely out of my comfort zone. My grades took a hit, and frustration set in. But instead of letting anxiety take over, I took a different route—I sought help from my instructor.

What I learned from that meeting was a game changer: While calculus might not be relevant to my future career, the real lesson was about pushing my limits and striving for excellence, not perfection. By focusing on doing enough to demonstrate a basic understanding, I was able to turn my near-failing grades into a solid C.

As a self-proclaimed perfectionist, this experience taught me the importance of grace and flexibility—both with myself and my learning. It’s a reminder that perfection isn’t always the goal, and sometimes, just showing up and putting in the effort can make all the difference. If you’ve ever struggled with academic pressure or perfectionism, this episode is for you!
